“Aunty, is this a good secret or a bad one?” That simple question stopped me in my tracks. It was asked by a five-year-old girl during one of my early safeguarding workshops — and it changed everything for me.

In that moment, I realised just how necessary it is to teach our children about speaking up and knowing who their trusted adults are. More importantly, the fact that this education needs to begin early.

Why Secrets In The Woodland?

Children are often told to “keep secrets” — some innocent, others harmful. Without guidance, they can easily become confused. What if they are keeping a secret that feels weird, or a secret about their body, but they think it is just being “good” or being a loyal friend?

This is where Secrets In The Woodland comes in. This warm and beautifully illustrated picture book helps young children (ages 3+) understand the difference between good and bad secrets. Through the adventures of a group of woodland friends, children learn that bad secrets should never be kept, and they are taught to recognise who their trusted adults are.
