As someone who has written job descriptions for educational roles, I will be sharing how to prioritise safeguarding in the advertised Job Description.

- Define safeguarding responsibilities. It is important to clearly outline specific duties, such as implementing child protection policies, reporting safeguarding concerns, and ensuring a safe environment for students.
- Emphasise your school’s commitment to child welfare. Use language that reflects the school’s dedication to safeguarding, such as “dedicated to building a nurturing atmosphere” or “promoting a culture of safeguarding.”
- Specify required qualifications and experience. Be sure to include necessary certifications, such as child protection training, and mention prior experience working with children to attract candidates with relevant expertise.
- Outline essential competencies. Here, you highlight key skills, such as effective communication, empathy, and collaboration with colleagues and external agencies. For example, state that the “ideal candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to handle sensitive situations with discretion.”
- Provide an overview of relevant safeguarding policies. Share information about the school’s safeguarding policies and practices, including staff training, the role of the designated safeguarding lead, and reporting procedures.
- Clarify the recruitment process. Remember to state that “all offers of employment will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service check and reference checks” to reinforce the importance of safeguarding throughout the recruitment process.
- Promote an Inclusive Recruitment Approach. Indicate your commitment to diversity and inclusion by highlighting that safeguarding applies to all staff and that the school values candidates from diverse backgrounds.
Use these methods to prioritise safeguarding from the outset of the recruitment process, and be sure to share your feedback.
