Hello Shielded Space,

My post today is dedicated to
teenagers. I recently had the opportunity to speak with a child who had been
unsafe on the internet, and had her personal details including details of her
address leaked online. While speaking to her, I realised that she had no idea
how to use social media safely, and this prompted this post.

In my line of work, I have come to
understand that being a teenager today comes with a whole new set of
challenges, especially in the digital age. The internet and social media have
opened up a world of opportunities and connections, but they also bring their
fair share of risks. This is why it is essential to equip our teenagers with
the knowledge and skills to stay safe online and use social media responsibly.
So, today, we are diving into some top tips for online safety and responsible
social media use.

1. Privacy Settings Matter

Take a moment to review your privacy
settings on your social media platforms. Make sure you are sharing your content
with the right people and not leaving yourself vulnerable to unwanted
attention. Only accept friend/follower requests from those you genuinely know
and trust.

2. Be Cautious with Personal
Information

Sharing personal information like
your full name, address, phone number, or school details, leaves you vulnerable
to predators. Even seemingly innocent information can be exploited by the wrong
people. Protect your privacy.

3. Think Before You Post

Remember that once something is
online, it can be challenging to take back. Be mindful of what you post,
especially when it comes to photos, videos, and personal information. Respect
other people’s privacy and ask for their consent before posting about them.

4. Cyberbullying Awareness

Sadly, cyberbullying is a real issue.
If you encounter any form of online bullying or harassment, do not suffer in
silence. Reach out to a trusted adult, a teacher, or a helpline for support.
Block or report the bullies, and always prioritize your mental well-being.

5. Digital Footprint

Your digital footprint is the trail
of information you leave behind online. Everything you post, like, and comment
on contributes to it. Keep in mind that potential employers, universities, and
others might look at your digital footprint. So, ensure it reflects your best
self.

6. Fact-Checking and Critical
Thinking

Not everything you see online is
true. Be a critical thinker and fact-check information before sharing it. Do not
fall for misinformation, and encourage your friends to do the same.

7. Screen Time Balance

While social media can be a great way
to connect, don’t forget to maintain a healthy balance. Spending too much time
online can impact your well-being and face-to-face relationships. Set screen
time limits and make time for other activities.

8. Seek Support When Needed

If you ever feel overwhelmed,
anxious, or distressed due to your online experiences, seek help. Talk to a
trusted adult, a friend, or a counselor. Remember that it is okay not to have
all the answers.

9. Empower Your Peers

If you see a friend or classmate
struggling with online safety or facing cyberbullying, be there to support
them. Encourage them to speak up, and together, we can create a safer digital
environment.

10. Respect and Kindness

Finally, the golden rule: treat
others online as you would in person. Kindness and respect go a long way.
Remember, there is a real person behind every screen.

Stay safe and make the most of your
online experiences! Your digital world can be a fantastic place to learn,
connect, and express yourself. Use these tips to help ensure that your journey
through the digital landscape is a positive one.
